T3: Top Ten Facts You Need to Know About UP Cookout

Top 10 Facts You Need to Know About UP Cookout | Oble Square by TINTA

1. The UP Cookout is not an event where students bring different kinds of food and cook it together.

Cookout originally started as a protest gathering against an oppressive dean in 1987 where people gathered and brought food to cook to make the social gathering more motivating and entertaining (earning its name as it was, quite literally, a cookout). Nowadays, however, there is no more cooking during the event unlike when it first began. Cookout has now evolved into UP Cebu’s grandest event where students showcase their talents through four different segments: Sayawan (dancing), Kantahan (singing), Bandahan (bands), and Rampahan (fashion walk/modelling).

2. Cookout has a crowd of about a thousand (1000) people.

Being one of the most awaited school events in Cebu City, Cookout is not limited to UP Cebu students. The event manages to draw in all kinds of people from other university students to young professionals to different organizations. With all the amazing performances lined up and lots of surprises you weren’t expecting, it’s no surprise then that UP Cookout continues to makes waves among those who join.

3. Expect students to go nude when it comes to the Rampahan segment. But, not always.

Rampahan was added as a competitive category in 2000, spearheaded then by UP Ligaya. The participants need not expose too much skin, but rather, focus on integrating the participants’ costumes with the current theme and advocacy being upheld. However, rumor has it that in 2007 a Rampahan participant had the courage to go all out (get it – ‘all out?’) for their organization’s presentation and ramped in the nude! Talk about unexpected surprises.

4. UP Cookout is one giant party. And more.

While Cookout is an event where students can mingle and enjoy different forms of entertainment, it has never failed to present social realities or tackle relevant social issues. UP Cookout is not only a party, but a party with a cause – it always addresses and advocates for a relevant social issue of its time.

Despite the changes the event has undergone like bigger and bigger productions each year, the essence and integrity of the Cookout is still present. Cookout’s purpose, which is to present issues and uphold social awareness through various mediums, is still there.

5. Cookout does not only showcases students’ talents but it has brought different artists to the stage.

There is no question regarding the active and willing involvement of the student body in the different segments organized, but the Cookout organizers continue to take it one step further by inviting prominent Cebu-based performers and big artists to the stage: Battle Rap Icon Loonie, Slapshock, Decadance, Drop Decay, Shuffled, Bethany, Missing Filemon, Powerspoonz, Gestalt, Foc Fashion and many more, with some artists even coming back several times to perform. Rumor has it that national artist, Urbandub, is even going to perform during this year’s Cookout!

6. One time, UP students brought a swimming pool to the event to ‘cool off’.

When it comes to amazing, out-of-this-world ideas on what to do for fun, you can always count on the Fine Arts students in UP Cebu. One time, it was said that they brought a kiddie swimming pool to the Cookout and swam around in it – complete with inflatable pool toys! While performing during one Cookout, the FASO band even ‘baptized’ the crowd by splashing them with water. Let’s just say the organizers weren’t so pleased, but hey, at least they were ‘refreshing’, right? Right?

7. Mosh pits!

Get ready to jump and sing your heart out because each Cookout event is sure to have moments where the crowd just cannot contain their excitement. You’ll rub elbows with old friends and complete strangers – worried about being shy? Don’t be! Because with all the music and dancing and singing, you won’t find it in yourself to feel nervous *wink*

8. Each year, three eggs are sacrificed to ensure a good, rainless weather for Cookout.

This is definitely not a myth. But rather than sacrifice, a probably appropriate term is “offer”. Three eggs are offered by the Cookout Production team to the Carmelite Monastery to pray for a rainless 6pm-6am party. Why eggs, you ask? It’s one of the monastery’s traditions. Even Sinulog organizers offer eggs for a fine weather. Let’s hope the eggs offered this year’s sacrifice will not be in vain.

9. During the wee hours of the morning, you may experience encounters of the supernatural type.

Sometimes, in the wee hours of the morning, people wander off to get a quick nap – and that’s when they meet…things nga dili ingon nato. A sample of some UP Cebu ghost stories? You might hear sounds of sailors and ships at the AS Lobby if you happen to be there at 3am. Or you might encounter girl ghosts in the comfort room or walking up and down the stairs. There’s even a kid who supposedly inhabits the Radio Lab in the Humanities Division.

So, if you aren’t too keen on meeting any of these inhabitants during Cookout, just enjoy the mosh pit and performances but if you’re the adventuring type, then feel free to explore away when the witching hour arrives – just make sure to bring a friend!

10. The UP Cookout is a 6 pm – 6 am nonstop event.

Hell yeah. UP Cookout is dusk-until-dawn event. Be prepared for anything because you never know what happens when the party gets started!
